About Mission Santa Clara

The historic Mission Santa Clara de Asis is a consecrated Roman Catholic church. It was first established in 1777 by the Franciscan Order and is the 8th mission in the chain of 21 Franciscan missions established by Padre Junipero Serra. It is also the first to be named after a woman, St. Claire of Assisi, an early companion of St. Francis. Several natural disasters forced five relocations until the mission settled on its current site. Eventually, the mission was handed over to the Jesuits, who then started Santa Clara College, the first institution of higher education in California, in 1851. This location is now the gorgeous Santa Clara University Campus.

Guided tours by campus priests of this mission are available where visitors can gaze upon the distinctive architecture and learn about its rich history. Daily masses and weddings are also held at this beautiful location.
